If you're reading this article then chances are you're fortunate enough to be able to travel and explore beautiful new cities and countries. And with years of pandemic restrictions finally behind us, there's never been greater demand to see the world.

Islam views travel as a good deed if done with good intentions, and it was the Muslims historically who managed to spread Islam to all corners of the Earth predominantly through their attitude towards travel.

In fact, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) urged his Ummah to travel in order to expand their horizons physically and spiritually. Here are some specific duas you can make when travelling.

The best dua for travelling ✈️

Transliteration: Subhanalladhee sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen wa inna ila rabbina lamunqaliboon

English Translation: "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could
not have [otherwise] subdued it, and indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return."

This is one of the most powerful short duas that Muslims often learn as children. Narrated by Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi, it was recorded that as he set off on his travels, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would recite this heartfelt plea, acknowledging Allah's mercy and omnipotence.

Three More Duas for Travelling 🤲

1. Dua for journey protection

A comforting supplication, documented in a Hadith by Muslim, it asks Allah to be a companion during the journey and a guardian of the family left behind:

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ، وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الأَهْلِ

Transliteration: Allahumma antas-sahebu fis-safari, wal-khaleefatu fil-ahl

English Translation: "O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor over the family."

This dua invites the divine protection of Allah, giving us comfort that we are not alone in our journey and that our families remain safe in his care.

2. Dua for an easy journey

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ

Transliteration: Allahumma hawwin alayna safarana hadha watwi anna bu'dahu

English Translation: "O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance."

Recorded in a hadith by Abu Dawood, this heartfelt plea lightens the burden of travel, invoking Allah's grace for an easy and swift journey.

    3. Dua for a safe return

    Arabic: آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ

Transliteration: Aiboona, taiboona, ‘abidoona, lirabbina hamidoon

English Translation: "Returning, repenting, serving, and praising our Lord."

Narrated in Muslim, this prayer expresses a traveler's desire to return home in a state of repentance, servitude, and praise of Allah, highlighting the spiritual growth attained during the journey.

Travelling in Islam is as much a physical journey as it is a spiritual one. Through the lens of faith, even mundane aspects of travel become opportunities to remember Allah (SWT) and seek His protection. As we voyage, these duas become our spiritual compass, guiding us towards divine safety and blessings.
