The holy month of Ramadan is a time of introspection, purification, and deepening connection with Allah. One of the most poignant moments during this sacred month is Iftar, the breaking of the fast.

Iftar is not just about satiating our physical hunger with dates and quenching our thirst with water after a day of abstinence, it's a deeply spiritual occasion, a moment of grace when believers, united by faith and shared devotion, turn their hearts towards Allah (SWT) and supplicate.

In Islam, the moment of Iftar, which takes place at sunset or Maghrib, is considered a time when supplications are specially favoured by Allah (SWT), and the rewards are plentiful.

The best dua for Iftar 🌙

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us a beautiful and profound dua to recite at the time of breaking the fast. This supplication, sourced from Sunan Abi Dawud [2358], is not only a verbal expression but a testament to the transformative journey of fasting.

Arabic: ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ، وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ، وَثَبَتَ الأجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ

Transliteration: Dhahaba adh-dhama'u, wa'btallatil-'urooqu, wa'thabatal-ajru inshaAllah.

English Translation: "Thirst has gone, the veins are moist, and the reward is certain if Allah wills."

This fasting person's dua encapsulates the essence of fasting and the transformative experience it brings. It begins by recognizing the physical aspects of fasting – the quenching of thirst and the moistening of veins. Then, it transitions into the spiritual - the certainty of receiving divine reward, contingent upon Allah's will. It's a declaration that our body, soul, and spirit are involved in the act of worship and that we seek not just physical but spiritual nourishment and reward.

Three more duas for Iftar 🤲

1. Dua for breaking the fast

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ اِنِّىْ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ اَمنْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ

Transliteration: Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika amantu wa 'ala rizq-ika aftartu

English Translation: "O Allah, I have fasted for You, believed in You, and I break my fast with Your sustenance."

Narrated in Jami` at-Tirmidhi [3451], this dua is an affirmation of our submission to Allah (SWT). It acknowledges that our act of fasting is solely for Allah's sake. The affirmation of belief signifies our trust and faith in Him, and the recognition of breaking fast with His sustenance reinforces our acknowledgment of Allah's infinite provision.

2. Dua for supplications

Arabic: وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ

Transliteration: Wa idha sa'alaka 'ibadi 'anni fa'inni qareeb. Ujeebu da'watad-da'i idha da'ani

English Translation: "And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me."

An intimate dua directly from the Qur'an in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:186), this verse from the Qur'an serves as a reassuring reminder that Allah (SWT) is indeed close to us. He hears our prayers, sees our struggles, and responds to our calls. This dua encourages us to speak our hearts in supplication, assuring us that He is indeed listening.

    3. Dua for salvation from hell

    Arabic: رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَٰذَا بَاطِلًا سُبْحَانَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Transliteration: Rabbana ma khalaqta hadha batilan subhanaka faqina 'adhaban-Naar

English Translation: "Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire."

From Surah Al-Imran (3:191), Iftar time isn't just about halal food and drink. At the moment of breaking the fast, this dua helps us engage in a broader reflection about life, purpose, and the hereafter. It helps us remember that our lives, our fasting, our worship have a profound purpose and that we seek protection and salvation from the Fire.
