On any given day, it's likely that at some point we'll need to leave the house, whether it's to go to work, run errands, pick up children from school, go to the gym, or visit friends and family.

As with any other daily occurrence, we know that there can be a leaving house dua or supplication instructed for us, or recited by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), to make in that given moment to remember Allah and grant us Allah's protection, in the same way we recite the dua for eating and dua before sleeping.

The best dua for leaving the house 🏡

Translation: "In the Name of Allah, I have placed my trust in Allah, there is no might and no power except by Allah."

This highly referenced hadith, recorded by Abu Dawud and Sahih At-Tirmidhi, acknowledges that we place all our trust in Allah (SWT) and that he knows all, sees all, and is all-powerful. Therefore there is no-one greater to put your trust in when it comes to protecting your house and its contents, and protecting you for your journey ahead.

4 more short duas to make when leaving home

1. Dua for protection from harm

Translation: "In the Name of Allah with Whose Name nothing on earth or in the heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing."

This similar dua again recognises Allah as the One who can hear and know all. By supplicating to Allah we ask Him to remove anything that could cause us harm both in this life and the hereafter.

2. Dua for prosperity on leaving the house

Transliteration: Rabbi ishrah li sadri wa yassir li amri

Translation: "My Lord, expand for me my chest [with assurance], and ease for me my task."

Just as we might repeat this dua before an important exam, we can also recite this dua when outside of the home. In this supplication, we ask that God expands our knowledge and helps ease the impending task. This dua is derived from a larger dua recited by Prophet Moses (AS) in Surah At Taha.

3. Dua for righteous companions when leaving home

Transliteration: Waj'al lee lisan sidqin fil akhireen

Translation: "And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations."

It is said that we are the sum of our peers and this dua asks that outside of the home, Allah grants us noble friendship and righteous, God-fearing companions.

4. Dua for a safe journey when leaving home

Transliteration: Allahumma anta as-habu fi's-safari, wal-khaleefatu fi'l-ahl

Translation: "O Allah, You are my companion in the journey and the One in Whose care I leave my family."

In this final dua, recorded in Muslim and Sahih Al-Bukhari, we ask Allah to guide us as we leave the home, and if we are leaving family at home, to care for them when we are away.
