Muslim man struck by back pain

Pain is an unpleasant signal from your nervous system that something might be wrong. It is an extremely complex sensory and emotional experience that we associate with illness, both physical and mental.

However, while pain can serve to highlight our mortality as human beings and the vulnerability we have leading our lives, there are some duas that can help us relieve this pain and give us the patience to endure. These duas or supplications can give us hope that things will get better.

The best dua for pain relief 😩

Narrated in Sahih Muslim [2202], the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave us the following dua to help with relief from pain:

Arabic: أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ

Transliteration: A'udhu bi'izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru

English Translation: "I seek refuge in the glory and power of Allah from the evil of what I am experiencing and of what I fear."

This supplication asks The Almighty Allah for protection against harm and for His power to act as a shield for us, and helps us rationalise that we are indeed nothing without God's help.

Three more duas for pain relief 🤲

1. Dua for healing

English Translation: "Remove the harm, O Lord of mankind, and heal, You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind."

Recorded in Sahih Muslim [2191] it was narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would recite the above dua over the sick. The supplication is a heartfelt plea to heal and that there is no other healer other than God who can cure man.

2. Dua for distress relief

Arabic: وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Transliteration: Wa Ayyuba idh nada rabbahu anni massaniya adh-dhurru wa anta arhamur-rahimeen

English Translation: "And [remember] Job, when He called to his Lord, 'Truly distress has seized me, but You are the Most Merciful of those that are merciful.'"

Found in the Holy Quran in Surah Al-Anbiya [21:83] this story recounts how Prophet Ayyub (AS) supplicated to Allah to acknowledge his pain and seek His mercy.

     3. Dua for comfort

Transliteration: Rabbana la tu'akhidhna in nasina aw akhta'na

English Translation: "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred."

Found again in the Holy Qur'an in Surah Al-Baqarah [2:286] this dua is a call to Allah for His understanding and forgiveness. It stresses that He intercedes for us and not places blame on us. In doing so, this dua could give comfort to someone who is going through a painful experience.
